AirBNB & VRBO

If you choose a short-term rental there are lots of great neighborhoods in Seattle, many of which make it easy to visit without needing to also rent a car. Downtown neighborhoods include Pioneer Square, Chinatown-International District, Belltown, Denny Triangle, Pike Place Market, South Lake Union, and Uptown. If you do want to rent a car, neighborhoods like Ballard, Columbia City, or Madrona will have cheaper parking. Let us know in the comments if you need more info!

Coffee!

Yes, you can visit the semi-original Starbucks at Pike Place Market (and wait a loooooong time) or go to the fancy new flagship store on Capitol Hill, but if you like coffee, there are MANY other options. Here are a few we encourage you to check out.

  • Caffe Ladro – one of the first coffee shops Katie learned about when she moved here. A few locations downtown and around the city. Their espresso is mild and balanced and they have good pastries too!
  • City Grind – since it’s located in City Hall, Katie gets coffee here almost every day. The owner, Jon, has an amazing ability to remember your regular drink after just visiting a few times. He and Katie often share culinary recommendations.
  • Kaladi – has one location Capitol Hill, offers a taste of Alaska here in Seattle and was a staple of Katie’s time growing up in Anchorage. It’s co-located with Gay City, an awesome local organization that supports LGBTQ people.
  • Monorail Espresso – has many locations downtown, but be warned that the original location on 5th & Pike only accepts cash.
  • Tougo Coffee – with three locations in very different neighborhoods, Tougo is locally owned and definitely worth checking out. You can explore the maze of the Convention Center, take the Streetcar to Yesler Terrace, or make your way to 18th and Union to visit their original location.

If you really need to go to Starbucks though, check out the one on the 40th floor of the Columbia Center aka Skybucks. It’s got great views of the city without the lines or prices of going to the Space Needle.
